How To Keep The Guild Fire Burning

Are you a guild leader? If you are, then consider yourself as one of the luckiest players. How I can say this is based on several years of being one myself. I’m proud that I’ve been able to keep the guild going since 2005 (Wow, it’s been 4 years?). But, I’m more proud of the members of the guild than of my own achievements.

Every guild leader has their own style of how they manage their guild.  I can say that I’ve seen a lot of them since HolyOrder has a lot of leaders, and it has been a melting pot of different ideas and styles ever since. There are several that caught my attention, and there are those that I observed to be not so efficient. But here, I’ll talk about raising morale and activity, rather than managing.

First, you have to think: Why do people play games? Particularly, why do your members play these games? This has got to be the most important thing you have to consider as a guild leader if you want to keep your guild alive and kicking. Different people have different preferences – they have different needs and wants; they have their own goals.

When you started out, you probably were a handful of players with a common goal. That’s easy since you already know the common endpoint, the common attitude, and other common things that drove you to create a guild.  Now, once you decide to grow your guild, you have to figure out the types of people that you want to invite or accept into your “family.” It’s important (imperative, rather) that you only allow those people with ideals that are common with the majority into the guild. That way, you have less diversity to manage, and less headaches for everyone.

This is one of the ways by how you can manage your guildmate’s preferences.

You may not think that it’s not important to keeping the morale high, but remember that your guild is made up of individuals. They may have common ideals, but they are different people in their own right. When everyone has almost the same ideals, have the same outlook, and the same goals, they WILL get along… MOST of the time. LOL

Events

One of the most common ways of keep the guild running smoothly are events. Yes, as a guild master, it’s your task to either design events for your members yourself, or open up communication channels for your members to suggest events for everyone.

Events break the monotony of playing a game. Everything that they need to get through the game is in the game itself. It’s now up to you to make it more exciting, or more fun for them by adding extra spice.

With events come prizes. No, you don’t have to supply all the prizes yourself. Always remember that your guild is a family – a team. You’ll end up a dried up, squeezed out guild leader if you put all the weight on yourself when it comes to providing prizes. What I do is I ask some members if they want to add to the prize. If nobody can, then don’t worry that your prize will be too small. If you did things right, your guild will enjoy an event even without prizes.

Activities

Activities are the toned down versions of events. Here, you can be less creative. Basically, what you do is take the common routines, and do them as a guild. In RF, we do raids together, or we go through battle dungeons together; We battle in Chip War together.

What’s important here is that you do these activities as a guild. Prioritize your members when they go online. If there’s a slot in your party, then add them in. If there’s none, and one of your members need a party, ask anyone in your party that is not a member to leave to make space for your member: NICELY. If your guild doesn’t hold majority of the slots in the party, try to create a new one.

Everything depends on the situation you’re confronted with, so you don’t have to force yourself or your guild to group together always. But, the key thing here is that (majority of the time) your guild should be doing activities together.

There are several other things that you can do to keep the morale of your guild burning bright. I’ll continue on next time, but now, I have to go in-game and cater to the needs of my guildmates.

Praises! XD
